FISE Chengdu 2019 – WS Roller Freestyle Park World Cup Contenders

03 oct 2019 16:17

Could this be the year that sees an upset to the established Roller Freestyle order?

The 2019 FISE World Series (FWS) started much as the last, with GB’s Joe Atkinson firing out of the gates at Hiroshima to sweep 1st prize and a massive 10,000 points. Throwing tricks with insane transfers and height, it looked as if the 2018 FWS Champion was back to reclaim his crown.

Fast forward to Montpellier where a dominant French force shuffled Joe down to 4th place, with Jérémy Mélique, Yuma Baudoin and Roman Abrate claiming 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots respectively.

Winning over the Montpellier crowd with enormous air, misty flips and flatspins, the three French rockets blasted into FWS title contention. As they all head off to Chengdu, Joe still sits atop the ranking. But Roman and Jérémy are breathing down his neck and the flying Dutchman, Jaro Frijn, is lurking in 4th position ready to pounce.

Women’s Roller Freestyle is shaping up to be another thrilling contest of extreme talent.

Last year’s Series Champion, Manon Derrien, is in 1st place going into the final leg. A familiar face at FISE, she has stamped her authority across France in both the FISE Xperience and FISE European Series this year, but the ultimate test has yet to come. As Manon steps back onto the FISE World Series global scene, keep an eye out for 2018 runner-up Chihiro Azuma and Spain’s María Muñoz lurking in 2nd and 3rd. Both have had impressive seasons and are in with a shot at the FWS title after their showings in Hiroshima and Montpellier.
